Salem Lodge

A builder whom I had worked with on several projects over the years introduced me to someone he knew as youngster. The fellow had moved west and lived in the Bay Area for many years. He came back east when he inherited a large tract of land with the remains of a burnt out house – all that was left was a substantial stone foundation and three huge fireplace chimney masses.          The challenge was to create a brand new structure on the existing foundation and incorporate the still functioning fireplaces into the design.

The stonework set the tone for the rustic character of the new structure as described by the client.

Looking back toward the entry. The balcony was accessible from both ends of the Great Hall.
The timber frame was appropriate for the rustic character determined by the stone masonry.
