DUNE HOUSE

My clients had enjoyed many summers on Fire Island.  When a lot came on the market in an isolated spot in their club community, they jumped at the chance. They wanted their summer house to be set atop the high dune gaining views of the ocean to the south and extensive views to the north of the Great South Bay and the mainland of Long Island beyond.

The hipped roof just became another gentle profile, echoing the undulating slopes of the dunes well back from the beach. The club community mandates shingle siding in keeping with the existing houses and encourages buildings that reflect the character of the older houses, many of them dating back to the early 1900s.

The house is first seen from an eight-foot wide path limited to pedestrians and bicycles. Colorful wagons proliferate in this community, but there are no cars.
