In the mid 1970s, my wife and I had friends and family in Bedford, New York, and wanted to buy property and build a house. The house was designed for the wooded site with tall trees and existing stone walls which helped determine the building location.
The two-and-a-half story modified saltbox offered a variety of spaces, designed for specific purposes and special for each child’s room. It is an eclectic house in many ways, but as a family, and it responds to our needs.
It was fun to plan and build, and we named it after J. R. R. Tolkien’s “elfin refuge of Middle Earth”
A few years later, we added a long envisioned addition that expanded the footprint, adding a master suite and office and guest room at the ground level, blended a new wing into the existing structure
